Henry Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas is one of the best known operas written in English.
Inspired by The Aeneid (which students would remember from ‘English Literary Texts in Context’), its story is easy to follow as it is sung in a manner that the words are all pronounced clearly. Its baroque music is usually thought to add to the opera’s approachability. If you’ve never been to the opera before, this would be a good place to start. It will be performed in the Oosterport in Groningen on 23 April 2013. For more information see http://www.de-oosterpoort.nl/programma/the-king2019s-consort-o.l.v.-robert-king
