Armistice Day

Tyne Cot Cemetery

Armistice day (or Poppy Day) is celebrated annually on 11 November and marked by a minute’s silence at 11am. The time commemorates the armistice that ended World War I, but the day is one of remembrance for all the Commonwealth war dead. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains cemeteries such as the one above at Tyne Cot (which holds 12,000 casualties) all over the world. Their design follows the same pattern and the headstones do not differ on the basis of rank or sex (female nurses were killed at the front).
